A Song of Lament – November 2012

based on Lamentations 5

our streets are deserted, our shops have been looted

vandals have had their way

our sounds have been silenced

our people taken prisoner

rejected and empty city

she wails at night no one is there to listen

or wipe away her tears

no one goes to her festivals

or gathers to worship

rejected and empty city

Restore us to Yourself, Yahweh!

Return us to Yourself, Yahweh!

Renew us to the days of old!

This rejected and empty city

our children are orphans

our mothers are widows

punished for our fathers’ sin

Zion, Your Daughter: impure, stained, dishonored

rejected and empty city

we rebelled against Your command

You withdrew Your mighty hand

and struck us with righteous judgment

You refused our offerings, destroyed our dwellings

rejected and empty city

joy has left our hearts, we’ve traded dance for a dirge

under the rod of Your wrath

afflicted and homeless

abandoned and forgotten

rejected and empty city

we will examine our ways and turn back to You

lifting up hearts and hands to heaven

our only hope is You; Your unending love

This is Your city

Restore us to Yourself, Yahweh!

Return us to Yourself, Yahweh!

Renew us to the days of old!

Bring life to our city

You will not reject us forever, Your mercies are greater!

Dawn breaks through the night

Joy comes in the morning
